  1. Protecting Life? New Bill Says Its OK to Let Women Die

I had originally reposted this in the heat of the moment, so when I went to reread the post (copied below) and bask in my sure-to-be pissed off mood, due to the topic, I was shocked, to say the least. I noticed that the blogger who originally posted this (who has an awesome, seemingly feminist blog), actually writes that she’s “no feminist, but…” Why the “but…” in such an otherwise well done post? Honestly, I don’t get why people are so scared of the term “feminist.” I mean, what do people think will happen? Are they scared that the second they use it, to reference themselves, they’ll burst into a bra-burning kiniption? I mean, seriously, what’s the big f*cking deal, you like equality, it’s 2011, join the club. You’re not gonna burst into a Cher discography if you use the word. If you’re not a feminist, then what are you?

Either way, I agree with the point of the post, I’m just incredibly annoyed by the 3rd sentence of the 2nd paragraph.

    daisymay:

They want to “protect life” so much that they have written into the bill a new amendment that would override the requirement that emergency room doctors save every patient, regardless of status or ability to pay. The law would carve out an exception for pregnant women; doctors and hospitals will be allowed to let pregnant women die if interventions to save them will kill the fetus. [+]

So, what, an unborn fetus has MORE rights than a live woman? I don’t understand how things like this even get considered…first the redefine rape bill and now this? I’m no feminist but I know what’s just plain unfair. I don’t want to get into the whole abortion conversation, but come on!

So reading more details, it seems like this bill would allow hospitals and staff to make their own choice, if they are anti-abortion they do not have to perform one in order to save the woman’s life…whereas currently the law requires hospitals to save everyone despite status or ability to pay. Still…I’m not impressed.

Guess who’s going to bed angry tonight.
